Seasoned to the Bone: Frank’s is Bringing Soul to Market 5 in Charles City

If you’re cruising down the Virginia Capital Trail, rolling through the scenic roads of Charles City County, or just hungry for a good meal that tastes like home, Frank’s Grill is a stop you’ll want to make.

Helen Holmes, the heart and soul behind Frank’s, is no stranger to great food—or to Charles City. Born and raised in the county, she’s now returning to her roots by opening a second location of her beloved restaurant right here in her hometown. Her first spot, Miss Girlee’s Kitchen in Richmond, is named after her grandmother, and her new spot at Market 5 in Charles City will carry on that same tribute to family, flavor, and legacy.

“We just want to give all of our customers that feeling you’re going to your grandma’s and your grandpa’s house to eat dinner,” Helen says.

What’s on the Menu?

At Frank’s, the fried chicken is legendary—seasoned to the bone and cooked to crispy, juicy perfection. And trust us, Helen knows how to do it right. She learned from the best—her grandfather—and it all starts with the brine. (No, she won’t share the full recipe, but she did drop the tip to dredge the chicken in seasoned flour while it’s still wet for that extra crunch.)

Alongside the fried chicken, guests can expect:

  • Fried fish on Fridays
  • Cold salads for trail-goers and health-conscious diners
  • Kid-friendly options
  • Daily soul food specials
  • Homemade desserts—including her signature bread pudding with brandy butter (a holiday favorite that started as a thank-you gift for catering clients)

And speaking of catering—Helen’s bringing her full-service catering business to Charles City, too. Whether you’re planning a wedding at the local rec center or just want to order your holiday meal to go, she’s got you covered.

A Dream Realized at Market 5

Frank’s Grill is part of the new Market 5 food hall concept, which is bringing fresh energy and flavor to Charles City. For Helen, this is more than just a business—it’s a lifelong dream realized in the community that raised her.

“I’ve always dreamed of opening a restaurant in my hometown,” Helen said. “This has been my dream. It really is. And it’s come true.”

Frank’s Grill will be serving up soul food with soul, inspired by generations of family recipes and built on a foundation of love, community, and crispy fried goodness. Whether you’re on two wheels or four, make sure you stop by, grab a plate, and stay awhile.
